Sérgio Gonçalves do Cabo
Sérgio Alexandre dos Reis Gonçalves do Cabo was born in Faro – Portugal, in 1966. After his Graduation in Law at the University of Lisbon (1984-1989) and his Post-Graduate Studies in European Community Law at the Portuguese Catholic University (1989-1990) he completed a Masters Degree in European Community Law at the University of Lisbon (1990-1996) where he has been Assistant since 1991, teaching public finance law, economic law, tax law, and community law.
He is a full member of the Portuguese Bar Association since 1991 and has been a partner to a small Law Firm in Lisbon (“Magalhães Pereira, Medeiros Cordeiro & Gonçalves do Cabo – Sociedade de Advogados”). Since November 1995 he became Legal Adviser to the Portuguese Minister of Finance, position that he held until April 1998 when he became Legal Counsel in the Legal Division of the European Monetary Institute (EMI), later substituted by the European Central Bank (ECB).
He has been Legal Counsel in the ECB’s Directorate General - Legal Services since July 1998 and has been appointed Senior Legal Counsel in January 2000. He terminated his appointment at the ECB’s Directorate General - Legal Services on 31 March 2001 in order to conclude his doctoral thesis in European Community Law and resume private practice as a Lawyer. Despite termination of his employment contract he has been offered a positional as external legal counsel to the ECB until the end of 2001.
In July 2001 Sérgio A. R. Gonçalves do Cabo became co-founder and partner of the Law Firm Sousa Franco, Paz Ferreira & Associados, Sociedade de Advogados, with offices in Lisbon, later renamed to Paz Ferreira & Associados, Sociedade de Advogados.
In December 2013 Sérgio A. R. Gonçalves do Cabo started a new phase in his professional career becoming partner of the Law Firm Luís Silva Morais|Sérgio Gonçalves do Cabo & Associados, Sociedade de Advogados.
Sérgio A. R. Gonçalves do Cabo is author and co-author of several books, articles and papers in the fields of Labour Law, Economic Law, Public Finance Law and European Community Law. He frequently attends and gives speeches at conferences and seminars in his fields of expertise. He is a member of the Portuguese Association for European Law (member of the International Federation of European Law) and of the Inter-Universities Association for European Studies (member of the European Community Studies Association).
