2018, December - Jorge Menezes, of counsel of LSM/SGC for Macao and Hong Kong/China, has received the award “Person of the Year’ (2018) attributed by the Macau Daily Times Jorge Menezes, attorney-at-law and our of counsel for Macau and Hong Kong/China has received the award “Person of the Year’ attributed by the highly regarded Macau Daily Times in its special edition “2018 Year in review”. This distinction opened to anyone active in Macau, including, politicians, entrepreneurs, reporters, academics, artists or anyone professional engaged in liberal activities (including law practice) has been for the first time attributed to an attorney-at-law. With a population of 600 000 people mostly of Chinese origin this is always the first time this distinction is attributed to a citizen of Portuguese origin in Macau. Jorge Menezes was awarded on account of his action as attorney pro bono in judicial cases in which the defence of fundamental rights was at stake, those cases also being selected as one of the two “Events of the Year” considering its particular impact in this Special Region of the Popular Republic of China. Such intense judicial litigation has received a wide media coverage inside and outside of Macau, having Jorge de Menezes’ courage and skill as an attorney being praised in the course of 2018 for its contribution to the safeguard of legal principles core to the rule of law inherited from the Portuguese legal system.
