Jorge Menezes
​Jorge Menezes – Individual Consultant for Macau/China Jorge Menezes was born in Portugal in 1966, lived and worked in Portugal, Guinea-Bissau, United Kingdom and Macau, and holds Portuguese and British citizenships. Jorge finished his law degree in Portugal in 1991 (University of Lisbon) and undertook postgraduate studies at the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford. He lectured law and philosophy at universities in Lisbon, Guinea-Bissau, Stanford University (Oxford Centre) and the University of Oxford, where he was a Research Fellow from 2007 to 2011. At the University of Oxford, he was also co-convener of the Jurisprudence Discussion Group of the Faculty of Law and an elected member Governing Body of Wolfson College. He is a Fellow of the Cambridge European Society. Jorge presented several papers at conferences and published articles in academic journals in Portugal, Macau, Hong Kong and England, and contributed with articles in three edited books. He was a civil liberties and criminal lawyer before focussing more on Litigation, Tort, Corporate, Gaming, and Administrative Law. He worked as a legal advisor for the Macau Government before practicing law in Macau, where he is currently a partner in his law firm FC Law (www.fclaw.com.mo) and a private notary. Current significant cases include a lawsuit with a provisional claim of US$375million (initially reported in the New York Times, which the Wall Street Journal argued “could potentially total over $10 billion” of USD) and another with a US$160million claim. Among other cases, he represented companies in relevant lawsuits and negotiations with the Macau Government, some of which have called the attention of the local press. In 2018 Jorge Menezes has received the award “Person of the Year’ attributed by the highly regarded Macau Daily Times in its special edition “2018 Year in Review” https://macaudailytimes.com.mo/files/pdf2018/3200-2018-12-31-yir.pdf Previously, in 2013, Jorge had already been distinguished by the Macau Daily Times in its ‘2013 Year in Review’ with an honourable mention for a ‘historic win’ against the government and some Macau companies.
